The Stepping Stones

A simple pleasure: hopping across the Wharfe stone by stone, with the moor above you.

Ilkley's stepping stones cross the River Wharfe a short walk upstream (west) of the town centre, along the riverside path from the Old Bridge. They are a favourite with families and walkers, and a classic photo spot.

The Old Bridge itself is a hump-backed stone packhorse bridge, generally dated to the late 17th century, and it marks the traditional starting point of the Dales Way.

Safety first

  • Only cross when the river is low and calm. After rain the Wharfe rises very quickly and the stones can be submerged.
  • The stones can be slippery with algae; wear grippy footwear.
  • Supervise children closely. The water is colder and faster than it looks.
  • If in doubt, use the bridges instead.
